OK, it happens all the time I know......but when you start to see the art of your lowbrow/underground favourites being blatantly copied for others profiteering (is that a word?) it really hits a nerve!

Not so long ago I saw dodgy shag coasters at a major local grocery chain down here in Australia....on further inspection I noticed they were mass produced (or should I say mass ripped off) from China. My sister-in-law actually bought a set, unknowingly, because they looked
"kool"......she had never heard of Shag beforeI I later found out Outre gallery here in Oz who represent Shag and Ryden etc. did their best to put a stop to the importation of them!

While searchin for tiki mugs on ebay a few days ago I came across Mark Ryden's piece "Tiki God" being offered as an iron on transfer. On further inspection I realised this was not only an unauthorised item, they hadn't even given the artist any credit! I immediately contacted the seller and explained that it was wrong and a breach of copywright. They replied saying they had purchased the item "unaware"......but the story did'nt wash with me because they also offered an enlarging service and in their "sellers other items" had several more very familiar designs on offer!

Anyway, they basically were not too fazed by my concerns and the item continues to be listed! Ya' see this shit really pisses me off, being an artist myself. I'd like to know your thoughts on this matter of shamefully copying & profiting from others hard work?

to check out this item on ebay.....& send 'em a message if ya don't like what ya see!

Announcing the launch of my FREE Seth D8 art print source!

As an artisan I have two categories I work in, digital illustration and commercial graphic design. I have chosen to freely share my digital illustration with anyone whom would like a print. I have plenty of commercial clients to satisfy my financial needs, plus I know I will always have all of needs met in every way before I have even asked. I love sharing my digital illustration because when a person is drawn to a piece incidental love is created and the love of creation is reflected back to me. And I love, LOVE!

I have uploaded a large selection of my digital art in hi resolution format to shutterfly.com, I have also set up a page their to access and order the prints. They offer everything from 4x6 prints to 24x36 inch prints in amazing detail and color. You can even create your very own Seth D8 art book of your favorite pieces, all for very reasonable rates. The only cost involved is the production of the prints, and I do not get a cut or add a commission to the service. It is at cost, and my art is completely free for personal use.

Please feel free and browse my current selection and get prints of anything you like, and the best part is you get to be part of the creative process by choosing exactly the correct size and media to suit your need. I will be uploading new hi resolution images a couple times a month so be sure and subscribe to my new Artisantastic illustration RSS feed. When I produce a new image it is immeaditly added to the feed, so you will always be up to date with my latest creations. And believe me I am a prolific artist creating new pieces on a daily basis.

They are available in a selection of colours from black, bone (a very light beige-ish colour), cream, pink and white. The caps are waterproof and have a slight stiffness to the, which allows them to be shaped when worn, but are still pliable enough to tuck away in your pocket. The bills are either in a shiny patent leather type black, or in a black matte finish.

Now, don't get me wrong here - I'm happy as hell that this group exists and thanks to our moderator for keepin' it up 'n runnin'. I do hafta say I have a bit of a problem with the definition of this group, which also seems to read as a definition of the lowbrow movement. It reads: "Produced by self-taught, untrained eccentrics."

Just in case anyone should happen along who thinks that this is the definition, please read on, as most of the successful folks who fall under the lowbrow category are very well trained and skillful artists, many who went to art school and then discovered the lowbrow movement as a way to (initially) work against the mainstream art world. Artists such as Mark Ryden http://markryden.com/ Tim Biskup http://www.timbiskup.com/index.html and Sunny Buick http://www.sunnybuick.com/ have obviously been schooled in the arts. It is unfortunate that any untrained artist who happens to play with an idea may actually fall into the category of a valid art "movement" simply by these (lack of) qualifications. This, however, does not mean that all who are lowbrow have formal training - they may or may not, but their talent speaks on their behalf.

As with many movements, however, the lowbrow movement has become as commonplace as pop and about as controversial as surrealism. It has lost its edge in many ways, with a few exceptions.

** Here is a clearer definition of the lowbrow movement for those who are interested in some edification:

Lowbrow is a movement - slowly gaining momentum - that doesn't necessarily care if The Art World recognizes it as such. What matters to Lowbrow is that most of us average people do recognize it. Anyone who has ever watched cartoons, read Mad magazine, enjoyed a John Waters film, consumed a product with a corporate logo or possessed a sense of humor shouldn't have a hard time getting comfy with Lowbrow.

Lowbrow-the-Movement has here been assigned a "circa" of 1994, as that is the year that Lowbrow artist extraordinaire Robert Williams http://www.fantagraphics.com/artist/williams/williams.html founded Juxtapoz magazinehttp://www.juxtapoz.com/ . Juxtapoz showcases Lowbrow artists and is currently the second best-selling art magazine in the U.S. (This seems like a good time to mention, too, that Williams claims copyright on the word "Lowbrow".

As both pioneer and current grandee of the movement, he is certainly entitled.)

The roots of Lowbrow, however, go back decades to Southern California hotrods ("Kustom Kars") and surf culture. Ed ("Big Daddy") Roth is frequently credited with getting Lowbrow, as a movement, underway by creating Rat Fink in the late 1950s. During the 60's, Lowbrow (not known as such, then) branched out into underground Comix (yes, that is how it is spelled, in this context) - particularly Zap and the work of R. Crumb, Victor Moscoso, S. Clay Wilson and the aforementioned Williams.

Over the years, Lowbrow has unapologetically picked up influences from classic cartoons, 60's TV sitcoms, psychedelic (and any other type of) rock music, pulp art, soft porn, comic books, sci-fi, "B" (or lower) horror movies, Japanese anime and black velvet Elvis, among many other "subcultural" offerings.

Is Lowbrow a legitimate movement?
*****************************

Well, The Art World seems to get to decide these things. Time will tell. It's worth noting, however, that The Art World didn't cotton to many movements when they first emerged. The Impressionists endured years of lampooning by art critics - many of whom probably went to their graves kicking themselves black and blue for not buying early Impressionist works.

Similar stories exist about Dada, Expressionism, Surrealism, Fauvism, the Indian River School, Realism, the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood...aw, gee whiz. It'd be easier to list the times The Art World got in on the ground floor of a movement, wouldn't it?

If the test of time for legitimacy (as an artistic movement) means that Lowbrow speaks/spoke, in visual terms, to the millions of us who share a common cultural, symbolic language - albeit a "lower" or "middle" class, media-driven language - then, yes, Lowbrow is here to stay. Anthropologists will probably study Lowbrow in the future, to attempt to figure out late 20th and early 21st U.S. societal influences.

What are the characteristics of Lowbrow?
**********************************

* Lowbrow was born of underground or "street" culture.

* The single most common tactic that Lowbrow artists employ is to poke fun at convention. They know the "rules" of art, and consciously choose not to abide by them.

* Lowbrow art has a sense of humor. Sometimes the humor is gleeful, sometimes it's impish and sometimes it's born of sarcastic comment, but it is always present.

* Lowbrow draws heavily on icons of popular culture, particularly those now commonly known as "Retro". Tail-end "Baby Boomers" will recognize them straight away, unless said Boomers were raised in an environment that disallowed outside influences.

* Lowbrow, while it is defining itself, goes by a number of aliases: underground, visionary, Neo-Pop, anti-establishment and "Kustom" are but several examples. Additionally, John Seabrook has coined the phrase "Nobrow", and one has also seen the term "Newbrow".

* For the time being, most Lowbrow art isn't sanctioned by the critical/curatorial/gallery-going mainstream. The few exceptions to this seem to be happening primarily in the greater Los Angeles area, with a smattering of southern Florida exhibitions thrown in. Juxtapoz magazine is the best bet for becoming acquainted with Lowbrow artists.

* Lowbrow currently suffers something of an identity crisis, due to having a wide variety of artists lumped into it. For example, the designer of a simple, kitschy decal may be accorded the same Lowbrow designation as the artist who composes a technically masterful Lowbrow painting or sci-fi sculpture. Hopefully, this will sort itself out in years to come. Meanwhile, you might want to begin collecting Lowbrow now, for the sakes of your grandchildren.

Best,
T.Paul

The unmitigated body and all its seen parts move me to paint. Stripping away identify, my interest is to use the genderless human form as a vehicle of emotion, situation and place. To visually illustrate and unlimitedly process the multitude of feelings I have about my self, my life, others and the lives around me.

G'day all! A little update on whats happenin in the scene here downunder!
The 3rd annual RUDE NUDE show is coming around again in Sydney. More than 30 artists are showing their rudest and nudest works and we also have the traditional nude bodies being painted to roll around on canvas. These canvases are later auctioned or donated to a good cause!
It is run by the Zooids (a Zooid is a cell capable of spontaneous movement outside of the parent organism!) Basically we are a movement that thinks and operates outside of the usually sterile confines of the mainstream
artworld. Our motto is "Bringing art back to the people"!, and that is what we do, holding at least a dozen shows a year between 3 different hotels/pubs which are our permanent spaces.
The upcoming Rude Nude will be our biggest yet, so if you are in Sydney check out the flyer i've posted in the photo album for details or go to zooid.tribe.net
So I have been drawing/painting/etc since I was itsy bitsy and have only had a bit of "training". Mainly just for clay sculpting and the such. Otherwise, I'm completely self-taught. I want to become an art teacher possibly, so I will probably have to go into classes in college.
Anyway, hi!

Hey Folks!

If you ’re anything like me, you ’re probably looking around you at all of the Christmas and holiday poop hitting the airwaves, shop windows, and anywhere else you can imagine and going “EEK! Not again! What am I gonna do for the gifts and stuff?! ”or “Sheesh...commercialize it even more why dontcha! ”

Well, some of you are familiar with my one-of-a-kind hand painted cigar box art that I sell at Vancouver ’s “A Baker ’s Dozen ”Antique Shop & Curio Emporium. I ’ve also done many a commissioned piece for folks from here to the southern USA.

I am currently offering this special treat to all of my friends. The boxes that are completed, most of which are pictured below (the others I can send you images of at your request) I regularly sell for $100 Canadian plus shipping where needed via the store and the internet. I am offering as a Pre-Christmas gift special to any of you who are receiving this my pre-done boxes at $70 –a discount of $30!

Here ’s the uber-special treat:

I also do commissioned pieces to order with the customer ’s choice of images on the boxes at a regular price of $150 to $200 depending on the extent of detail. I am offering you folks the opportunity to have made to order a commissioned box at the discounted price of $120 (plus shipping where required) with ½up front and the other ½upon completion.

What more unique a gift to give than say a quality wooden cigar box with your parent ’s wedding portrait n the top, or your friend ’s favorite musician or author, pin up gal images, tattoo influenced work, you or a friend in a side show poster-like performance image, or even a family pet?!

I have a few orders on the go right now, so please, if you are interested contact me A.S.A.P. as this offer will not stand for too much longer!

Hope all ’s well with all of you, and I look forward to hearing from you soon should you be interested!

Like almost every artist I know, I've lived the stereotype of "starving artist" as I do my art (key word being "my" art) because I have to, but as soon as I realized that I could alos create for other people, like so many musicians who will do their original music but will also sit in as session artists in recordings to make ends meet, I started selling my work.

It ain't a "sell out" situation. It's receiving commissions from folks to paint their chosen subject matter with my artistic style. Not bad, huh?

The pieces I've done that seem to move extremely well in both theUS and Canada are my cigar boxes which you can take a gander at here
http://static.zed.cbc.ca/users/t/t-paul/files/cigar_boxes_collage_SMALL2.jpg

I'm also a working poet, who aside from writing for my need and passion to do so, gets hired for spoken word gigs and performances/workshops in how to do what I dio for high schools accross my province.

It's satsfying to finally, after decades of working, be amking a living at my art.
